Sunscreen is a chore to apply to toddlers. They’ll purposely avoid it and you as you struggle to slather them up on a sunny day. Most babies have used sunscreen from 6 months of age onward.
Pre-teens and teens can start with a simple cleansing and moisturizing routine which will help down the road as they are more prone to develop skin issues. Pre-Teens can benefit from getting into positive healthy habits that (we hope) will become second nature for the rest of their teens and into young adulthood. Teaching kids about self-care teaches kids the importance of maintaining the lifelong health of the skin.
We all benefit from decreasing sun exposure and getting serious about sun damage and avoiding premature aging and skin cancer.
Conditions such acne can be lessened by already having the habit to take care of skin. Acne can be complicated by several factors but to generalize, teens who experience acne, depending on severity, could be said to have an advantage in that they understand the importance of adhering to skin care regimens and they’ve personally witnessed major changes in their skin.
Teens often enjoy beauty products and often this is a good use of the most basic grocery store items as they commonly do not contain active ingredients and are more “feel good” products. “Active” ingredients are intended to have a therapeutic and pharmacologic activity. The percentage and exact function of each active ingredient must be approved by the FDA. Here is an intro from the Cleveland Clinic into examples of some active ingredients.
At age 18 young adults can begin using serums and more targeted products. From 18-25 consider “anti-aging” products. Depending on skin type, exposure to sun, and other factors, it may be appropriate. Most important is to develop a skin care routine to get into the practice of taking care of skin and focusing on “problem” issues. Masks and the use of professional products that contain active (stronger) ingredients are a great start.
At 25 adults can begin to get serious. It’s time for daily use of active products that encourage healthy aging. Notice we say “healthy aging” as we invite and encourage embracing the natural process and inevitability that we will advance in years. We can still take measures to look and feel our best! Awareness and taking first steps will keep skin looking clean with a fresh healthy glow.
